Should Afridi be Included in T20 Squad?
Shahid Afridi stepped down as Pakistan T20 captain due to poor performance in ICC World T20 cup and criticism from former players and cricket fans. Afridi decided to keep playing in T20 format as an allrounder only. A view to give Afridi a farewell in Pakistan v West Indies T20 series doesn't seems like happening anymore. Pakistan has already announced T20 squad and Afridi is not part of it. Selection committee head Inzamam-ul-Haq made that decision in absence of Shaharyar Khan (recovering from surgery) and Najam Sethi (on holidays). Should Afridi be included in T20 squad for upcoming series against West Indies is in doubt.
Afridi Wants to Play T20 For Pakistan:
Shahid Afridi had planned to retire after World Cup T20 2016 but later on decided to carry on T20 cricket. However, PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan insisted that Afridi should keep his words. Afridi is a pathan and he made that agreement that he will retire from T20 cricket so he should respect his decision. Afridi is under pressure to reconsider his cricket career due to pressure from friends and fans but it is bit too late for Pakistani veteran to return to international cricket. Afridi has not played any cricket for Pakistan since World cup T20 earlier this year and selection committee doesn't consider Afridi a part of their future plans.
Afridi Fitness and Current Form:
Shahid Afridi played 12 domestic T20 matches in Natwest T20 blast but only scored 191 runs and took 9 wickets. He only played one match in domestic T20 due to poor fitness. Afridi went for rehab and was expecting to be selected for Pakistan vs West Indies T20 series. Afridi current fitness level was below average, due to injury to his knee and not playing enough competitive cricket. His performance in T20 has dipped down a lot. Shahid Afridi record as T20 captain is not bad as like his performance as a captain. Afridi led Pakistan to 11 victories out of 24 matches, which is less than 50 percent. But his batting average was only 14.65 and only managed to take 20 wickets which is way less for a player for his kind.
A Farewell for Shahid Afridi:
Should Afridi be given an other chance as a farewell? Or Afridi could have utilized his opportunity while he was leading Pakistani team in T20 World Cup 2016 in India. I am a big fan of Shahid Afridi, but risking future of young Pak cricketers just to give Afridi a farewell is not fair either. Selection of team must always be based on players performance and it should not be based on big names. But at the same time players should exit with dignity and respect. Big names who have done a lot for Pakistan should not be treated as rubbish bag and thrown out of team. Shahid Afridi feels that he is fit and he can serve Pakistan for bit longer time. What is your view? Should Afridi be included in T20 squad against West Indies?
